Baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

Today on the Feast of the Holy Trinity we celebrate the mystery of one God in Three Persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the Gospel for today’s Mass, we hear Jesus’ final words to his disciples, after rising from the dead and before he ascends to God the Father. The disciples fall down in worship before Jesus, though some hesitate. After all that they have heard and seen, it is still hard for them to take it in and to believe that he has truly risen from the dead. Jesus commands them to go out and make disciples of all nations. The Good News is for everyone – no one is excluded from God’s Church. We become members of the Church by being baptised ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ We are baptised into the mystery of the Holy Trinity; by our baptism we are invited to share in the love of Father, Son and Spirit that is the driving force of the whole universe. We will never understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity in this life. The Lord calls us to trust him, to believe in him and, as members of his Church, to live in the mystery of love that he has revealed to us.
