Social: ‘A Spirituality of Sports’

A talk by Fr Peter, Wednesday 3rd November, after the 7pm Mass

Sport is a virtually universal feature of human civilization from ancient times to today. The Church’s attitude towards sports has shifted through history, with popes in the last one hundred years taking a more positive attitude to the benefits of physical exercise and healthy venues for competition.

Fr. Peter will develop a kind of “spirituality of sports.” He will highlight the way they can help cultivate in us the cardinal virtues and enkindle wonder and joy, but also their tendency to become a kind of replacement religion in the contemporary world, adopting quasi-liturgical trappings and religious vocabulary, and tapping into certain religious instincts for transcendence and ecstatic experience.
